Evidence of superfluidity in a dipolar supersolid from nonclassical rotational inertia

چکیده
A key manifestation of superfluidity in liquids and gases is a reduction the moment inertia under slow rotations. Non-classical rotational effects have been searched for long time also elusive supersolid phase matter, which coexists with lattice structure. Here we show that recently discovered dipolar quantum features reduced inertia. We study peculiar oscillation mode harmonic potential, scissors mode, already employed superfluids. From measured inertia, infer superfluid fraction different from zero order unity, providing direct evidence nature supersolid.

Superfluidity of grain boundaries and supersolid behavior.
When two communicating vessels are filled to a different height with liquid, the two levels equilibrate because the liquid can flow. We have looked for such equilibration with solid (4)He. For crystals with no grain boundaries, we see no flow of mass, whereas for crystals containing several grain boundaries, we detect a mass flow. Our results suggest that the transport of mass is due to the sup...

We study the superfluid character of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) in a quasi-two dimensional geometry. We consider the dipole polarization to have some nonzero projection into the plane of the condensate so that the effective interaction is anisotropic in this plane, yielding an anisotropic dispersion relation. By performing direct numerical simulations of a probe moving through th...
متن کاملSqueezing superfluid from a stone: coupling superfluidity and elasticity in a supersolid.
Starting from the assumption that the normal solid to supersolid (NS-SS) phase transition is continuous, we develop a phenomenological Landau theory of the transition in which superfluidity is coupled to the elasticity of the crystalline lattice. We find that the elasticity does not affect the universal properties of the superfluid transition, so that in an unstressed crystal the well-known ano...
متن کاملCoexistence of ordinary elasticity and superfluidity in a model of a defect-free supersolid.
The mechanical behavior of a supersolid is studied in the framework of a fully explicit model derived from the Gross-Pitaevskii equation without assuming any defect or vacancy. A set of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations plus boundary conditions is derived. The conditions of mechanical equilibrium are studied under external constraints such as steady rotation and external stress. ...
متن کاملMoment of inertia and superfluidity of a trapped Bose gas.
The temperature dependence of the moment of inertia of a dilute Bose gas confined in a harmonic trap is determined. Deviations from the rigid value, due to the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation, reveal the superfluid behaviour of the system. In the noninteracting gas these deviations become important at temperatures of the order of TcN −1/12. The role of interactions is also discussed. P...
